What to do when my composite get stained

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

“My composite bonding has become stained. Does it need replacing?”

The answer is not always.

Just like natural teeth, composite bonding can pick up stains over time. Coffee, tea, red wine, curry, smoking, and even some mouthwashes can gradually affect the surface. This is completely normal and does not necessarily mean your composite bonding has failed.

The first thing I recommend is a professional cleaning and polish. In many cases, surface stains can be removed, and your composite bonding can look significantly brighter again without replacing anything.

If the staining has penetrated deeper into the material, a refresh may be needed. Depending on the condition of the bonding, this could involve reshaping, repolishing, or replacing only the affected areas rather than redoing the entire smile.

To help keep your composite bonding looking its best:

• Maintain good oral hygiene

• Have regular professional cleanings

• Rinse with water after consuming strongly coloured foods and drinks

• Avoid smoking where possible

• Wear your night guard if one has been recommended

One thing many people do not realise is that composite bonding often ages very differently from person to person. I have patients whose bonding still looks fantastic years later, while others may need maintenance sooner due to diet, habits, or bite forces.

The good news is that composite bonding is repairable. Unlike porcelain, it can usually be adjusted, refreshed, and maintained over time.

If you are unsure whether your composite bonding needs polishing, repair, or replacement, the best thing to do is send us a few photos. We are always happy to have a look and advise you on the most conservative option.
